Earlier this week, a delegation from the Estonian Rail Baltica Youth Community, in cooperation with Rail Baltic Estonia, visited Riga to gain deeper insight into the history of rail transport in the region and the progress of the Rail Baltica project.
The programme offered participants a broad understanding on both the heritage and future of rail in the Baltics. It included a visit to the Latvian Railway History Museum, where the group explored the evolution of the railway sector in Latvia. The exhibition provided valuable historical context, highlighting the significant role of railways in the country’s social and economic development.
To better understand the Rail Baltica project, the youth were welcomed at the RB Rail AS headquarters. There, they were introduced to the project’s vision, cross-border scope, and sustainability objectives. Presentations by RB Rail team members offered insight into the operational structure of the joint venture, the multidisciplinary expertise involved, and the cultural values that guide its implementation.
A key element of the visit was the focus on practical progress. The group received an update on Rail Baltica’s ongoing construction activities in Latvia, with particular emphasis on the redevelopment of Riga Central Station. A guided tour of the construction site, led by project and stakeholder representatives, provided participants with a first-hand look at the complexity and scale of the infrastructure works underway.
Through the visit, the Estonian Rail Baltica Youth Community met with project experts, visited key sites at Riga Central Station, and gained a better understanding of how Rail Baltica will improve connections and travel in the region. The experience also helped to strengthen cooperation across borders and encouraged young people to take an active interest in major infrastructure projects.
