Rail Baltica: The People Behind the Vision. Anita Rūdule-Jansone

Rail Baltica is a railway infrastructure megaproject that spans across three countries. The depth of skills and expertise required to successfully execute a greenfield project of this caliber is extensive and would not be possible without our diverse team of professionals.

In our series “Rail Baltica: The People Behind the Vision”, we will introduce you to some of our team members. These individuals are the driving force advancing the Rail Baltica project with their professionalism, dedication, and passion for this project.

Anita Rūdule-Jansone, Project manager of Riga Central Passenger Section, Railway bridge and embankment design and build (RCS) from the side of Contracting authority, SIA Eiropas Dzelzceļa līnijas.

When did you join the Rail Baltica project and what inspired you to become a part of the team?

In my role as a project manager, I have actively participated in all stages of the Riga Central Passenger Section (RCS) project’s development since 2016, a time when Rail Baltica was nothing more than an inspiring and forward-looking concept.

Back in 2016, the idea of the Rail Baltica project was seen as quite audacious for our small country. The almost infectious enthusiasm and conviction of the team persuaded me that the grand vision of Rail Baltica was not just a dream but something attainable, and I could play a meaningful role in its realization.

How has your role evolved since you first joined the Rail Baltica project, and what have you learned along the way?

Since this is a particularly complicated stage of Rail Baltica, at each stage of its development – procurement, acquisition, management of the stakeholders, design, construction, etc. – there are many problem situations, the solution of which gives me the opportunity to learn something new. Over time, I have realized that every problem can actually be a great opportunity for creative ideas that lead to functionally complete solutions. From experience, I can say that currently the RCS project has reached the most interesting stage of development, because the result of many years is finally visible – construction works are in full swing.

After 6 years spent on this project, I still admire the experts who are by my side and who are full of enthusiasm and work force even in seemingly the most difficult situations. I have a unique opportunity to work with representatives of different nationalities – a total of 25 nationalities from 15 countries. I believe that the RCS project has brought together the smartest experts and their knowledge not only helps to create one of the pearls of Rail Baltica, but also leaves an intellectual contribution to the growth of our country’s experts. It is hard for me to imagine a better school of professional life!

What does the Rail Baltica project mean to you?

To me, this endeavor represents a continuous journey of personal growth and learning, enriching my knowledge with each passing day. Simultaneously, it stands as a remarkable opportunity to engage in meaningful work, leaving a profound legacy for future generations to benefit from.

What do you believe is the most challenging aspect of this mega project?

Demonstrate adaptability by striving to discover solutions that can garner consensus among all stakeholders, all while keeping a keen eye on the constraints of both funding availability and project schedules. It is important to acknowledge that the challenge of securing adequate funding and adhering to strict timelines is a pervasive issue encountered by virtually all large-scale projects.

What sets the RCS project apart and renders it particularly distinctive is its central location within the heart of Riga, confined to a relatively restricted area, and the considerable multitude of involved parties.

What specific contribution or skill do you believe you bring to the Rail Baltica project team that sets you apart from others?

I have an unwavering belief in the project’s vision, and beyond that, I place my trust in the individuals who are actively transforming this vision into a reality. This trust is rooted in the deep-seated enthusiasm and unwavering loyalty that resides within their hearts for this project.

What hobbies, interests, talents do you have?

I find great joy in embracing life’s pleasures alongside my family. We embark on exciting adventures, exploring new destinations and immersing ourselves in different cultures through travel.

In addition to our adventures, I also indulge in the world of sports.

When I seek inner peace, I find solace in gardening. The process of tending to a garden provides a sense of connection with nature and a therapeutic escape from the bustle of everyday life.

Moreover, the kitchen becomes my sanctuary, where I unleash my creativity and passion for cooking. Experimenting with different ingredients and flavors, I delight in the art of culinary creation. The kitchen is a place where I can express myself and bring joy to others through delicious food.

In summary, my family, travel, sports, gardening, and cooking are all integral parts of my life, each providing unique sources of happiness and personal fulfillment.
