Rail Baltica Estonia delegation familiarized themselves with the construction progress of Rail Baltica in Latvia

Just a few days ago, experts from Rail Baltic Estonia, the national Rail Baltica implementing body in Estonia, along with representatives from the Rail Baltica international station in Tallinn, the construction association Merko in Ülemiste, and KMG, visited Latvia to learn about the construction progress of the future international Rail Baltica stations and gain insights from the experience of introducing the future European standard gauge railway in Latvia.

During the visit, it was emphasized once again that collaboration and exchange of experience among the implementers are crucial for the successful and efficient implementation of the largest railway infrastructure project in the Baltic region.

After visiting the construction sites of both international stations, the guests expressed positive feedback about the progress of Rail Baltica construction works in Latvia. They were also invited to visit the Rail Baltica Ülemiste station construction site at a later stage. Furthermore, they mentioned that active construction works for railway crossings and animal passages are currently taking place on the Rail Baltica route in Estonia.

It should be noted that last year, the Tallinn City Council approved the detailed planning of the Rail Baltica Ülemiste transport hub and its adjacent area in Tallinn. The project is a collaboration between Zaha Hadid Architects and ESPLAN OÜ, who won the architectural design competition for the Ülemiste passenger terminal building in 2019. In April of this year, AS Merko Ehitus Eesti, a part of the listed Estonian construction group AS Merko Ehitus, and KMG Infra OU signed a design and construction agreement with Rail Baltic Estonia for the first phase of construction of the Rail Baltica Ülemiste terminal. The contract value amounts to 44.8 million euros, making it the largest signed contract for Rail Baltica construction works in Estonia to date. The works will be carried out in stages, with the completion of the final stage planned for the end of 2026.
