Rail Baltica is taking shape across the Baltics
To accelerate delivery, Rail Baltica is being built in phases. Phase I establishes the cross-border main corridor across the three Baltic states and its connection to Poland. Today, more than 40% of the mainline is already under construction or construction-ready, and activity on the ground keeps expanding.
All current works are aligned with the 2030 target, and progress is steady. Keeping this pace will depend on timely financing in the years ahead.
Progress on the ground
Estonia: Over 100 km of mainline under construction, with major works progressing at Tallinn’s Ülemiste terminal and along key sections toward Pärnu.
Latvia: More than 200 km of mainline outside Riga (Phase I) is under contract, with around 30 km actively under construction. Riga Central Station and the airport connection are progressing in parallel.
Lithuania: 114 km of mainline under construction, with first tracks being laid. Bridges, rail systems, and other key infrastructure are taking shape along the corridor.
Systems and materials: key contracts in place
- Electrification design-and-build contract awarded
- Signalling and control-command procurement underway
- Consolidated purchases of key substructure materials completed
- Framework agreements signed for sleepers, rails, ballast, and turnouts
Regional rolling stock procurement launched
The Baltic national carriers (Elron, Vivi, and LTG Link) have launched a joint procurement for up to 20 Rail Baltica regional trains, built to European standard gauge (1,435 mm) and capable of 200 km/h.
This joint tender marks a key step toward operational readiness, keeping rolling stock on pace with infrastructure works to meet Rail Baltica’s 2030 deadlines.
