Rail Baltica: The People Behind the Vision. Edmundas Stanislauskas

Rail Baltica is a railway infrastructure megaproject that spans across several countries. The depth of skills and expertise required to successfully execute a greenfield project of this caliber is extensive and would not be possible without our diverse team of professionals.

Welcome back to our series, “Rail Baltica: The People Behind the Vision,” where we introduce you to the members of the Rail Baltica global project team. These individuals are the driving force advancing the Rail Baltica project with their professionalism, dedication, and passion for this project.

Edmundas Stanislauskas, Estimating Engineer, RB Rail AS

Edmundas Stanislauskas works as an Estimating Engineer at RB Rail AS, combining analytical thinking with a collaborative mindset. For Edmundas, success comes from turning complex information into clear, practical solutions while working alongside talented colleagues who support one another and maintain a positive attitude, even during challenging periods.

When did you join Rail Baltica, and what motivated you to become part of the project?

I joined Rail Baltica 1,5 years ago. I think my main personal motivation was to contribute to a mega-project that shapes the success story of the Baltic States and pass it on to future generations. My motivation booster also was good feedback about the company from a former employee, whom I know and trust.

How would you describe your role to someone who has never worked in rail or infrastructure, and what does a typical workday look like for you?

Estimating Engineer role basically meant to determine how much a project is going to cost before any construction starts. The role partly involves creating and developing unique unit price databases by analysing existing project cost estimates and applying them to low-level design parts, considering the time variable due to inflation. My typical workday basically looks like spreadsheet kingdom.

How do you stay focused and motivated during complex or high-pressure periods, and what is a challenge you have faced on the project that you successfully overcame?

During high-pressure periods, I stay focused by breaking work into priorities, creating internal milestones and concentrating on one issue at a time. I believe healthy routine is also very important. Since I’m a numbers person, I try to follow the golden rule – 10km of walk + 8h of sleep + 2l of water per day. I think usually the most challenging tasks were dealing with complex information from different sources and turning it into a structured, usable result in a short period of time.

How has working on Rail Baltica shaped you professionally?

I think working here improved (and still improving) my work planning and estimating from scratch skills, strengthened my attention to detail, and taught me the importance of teamwork and communication. Overall, working at Rail Baltica broadened my horizons as a specialist, giving me the freedom to make decisions to achieve my goals. It has changed my perspective, distancing me from the usual repetitive processes and rules that I was used to in previous experiences.

What do you value most in your colleagues?

What I value most in my colleagues is professionalism combined with a positive attitude. I appreciate colleagues who are supportive, willing to help each other, easy to communicate with, and stay positive even when work gets rough. I believe that good energy is contagious and can help overcome challenges.

What’s something colleagues might not know about you?

People usually raise an eyebrow when they hear my first profession. It was a singer (for sad occasions). It’s definitely excluded from my official CV, since I’m retired 10 years ago.

What advice would you give to someone considering joining Rail Baltica today?

My advice would be – don’t hesitate. Rail Baltica is not just a railway infrastructure project. It’s a community of talented people, driven by positive energy and a collaborative environment where you can grow as a professional and make a meaningful impact.
