Discover digital world of Rail Baltica through the virtual design

When it comes to modelling Rail Baltica in a digital environment and to manage Rail Baltica as a single asset, the Rail Baltica joint venture RB Rail AS is following a detailed Building Information Management (BIM) strategy that sets the basis for the virtual design works and is used during the design, construction as well as will serve as an input for the operations phase.

To provide a closer look into virtual design in Rail Baltica megaproject, we have launched a new episode of the series “Zoom in On Rail Baltica”.

“Everything in this project has a geographical location, so location intelligence is the key to success. It is important to educate general society and explain why we are focusing on this in the first place. If we can agree up front on design solutions in a digital environment, we can avoid misunderstandings when it comes to implementing the project,” said Raitis Bušmanis, Head of Virtual Design and Construction department at RB Rail AS.

Rail Baltica designers and engineers are now getting used to working with BIM and AIM systems – the Building Information Management and Asset Information Management. BIM is the modelling environment where it all starts. This unique project has brought together experts from the whole world, and BIM is the common language they all speak. And then the central environment where all these different systems meet is the Geographic Information System (GIS). It is also main source of truth where all modelling data comes together. GIS is so much more than just a map. It helps connect location intelligence with project scheduling – be it construction work planning, tracking deadlines or ensuring timely maintenance.

The series of “Zoom in on Rail Baltica” provide an opportunity to revisit numerous aspects of Rail Baltica, including design process, virtual design, technology and innovation, development of railway subsystems – electrification, control command and signalling, management of railway operation, economic corridor, and wider benefits of building the railway infrastructure among others.

The very first “Zoom in on Rail Baltica” episode explained the process behind planning and implementing electrification system for a brand new 870km long railway line across three Baltic States. You can find this video here: https://www.railbaltica.org/zoom-in-on-rail-baltica-video-series-launched-to-explain-implementation-of-rail-baltica/
