Geotechnical exploration works on the Rail Baltica route section Vangazi-Salaspils-Misa will begin this week

In the framework of the Rail Baltica project, starting in October of this year until the end of 2021, the Vangazi-Salaspils-Misa section will carry out geotechnical investigations. The purpose is to obtain the necessary technical information on the composition of the soil and its physical properties for the design of the Rail Baltica main route and the development of sustainable technical solutions.

The field work will take place at specific points along the entire railway section where experts will study the ground conditions using different drilling methods. The research is being conducted in order to develop recommendations that will be taken into account when designing infrastructure elements such as embankments, bridges, noise walls, culverts and animal passages.

All landowners whose properties will be affected by exploration in the Vangazi-Salaspils-Misa section will receive an informational letter regarding the works planned. The letter will indicate the purpose of the work planned and its implementers, the coordinates of the site, the method of investigation, the contact person as well as a protocol for the coordination of the works.

The research will be carried out by the Misa-Vangazi GI alliance consisting of five companies: AS Ceļu projekts, Ģeo Eko risinājumi, Ģeo eksperts, Markvarta ģeotehniskais birojs and VKB.

The Rail Baltica project is currently in the design process for 411 km of the main line and the next 233 km are being procured for design works. At the same time, the national project implementer in Latvia, SIA Latvijas Dzelzceļa līnijas, is carrying out design works at the Riga Central Station and Riga International Airport. Construction of the main line is scheduled to begin in 2022.
